The expander is where the hot gas does work on a mechanical element, at the expense of its internal high temperature and pressure.  The work obtained from the expander is the final product from the ORC system.  Many devices can perform the expansion, pistons came first, then turbines, nozzles, fans both axial & tangential, gerotors, but we prefer the piston. Regardless of the type of device the thermodynamic efficiency is a function of the difference in temperature that the fluid undergoes.  This is frequently interpreted as the difference between the inlet and outlet, and this is correct if the fluid stream is treated as a single component.
